What Is A Normal Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is an important number we track in medicine, yet many people aren’t sure what “normal” actually means.

Blood pressure is written as two numbers, like 120/80.

  • The top number (systolic) measures pressure when your heart beats
  • The bottom number (diastolic) measures pressure when your heart relaxes

So what is normal?

  • Normal: less than 120 / less than 80
  • Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80
  • High blood pressure (hypertension): 130/80 or higher

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, which is why it’s often called a “silent” condition. Over time, it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and more.

The good news is that blood pressure is easy to check, and often free.

Where Can You Check Your Blood Pressure for Free?

If you don’t have a home cuff, there are several convenient places around Hershey where you can check your blood pressure at no cost, such as pharmacies (like CVS) and grocery stores (like Giant)

A Few Tips for Accurate Readings

To get the most accurate result:

  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes before checking
  • Keep your legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor
  • Rest your arm at heart level
  • Avoid caffeine or exercise right beforehand

If you get a high reading, don’t panic – repeat it after a few minutes. Blood pressure naturally fluctuates. If your readings are consistently 130/80 or higher, it’s worth discussing with your doctor.

At Hershey Primary Care, blood pressure monitoring, management, and treatment (if needed) are all included as part of your membership, so you have ongoing support, not just a one-time check.
